Dr. Sean Herring considers student retention programs important because they may ultimately help adult learners achieve their personal, career, and academic goals.
This academic conviction led him to release a book on the subject of college retention.
Herring earned his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix. Currently, he is an educational leader and faculty at Briar Cliff University located in Sioux City, Iowa.
Dr. Herring's several years of experience in the education field include instruction at colleges and universities, curriculum design for on-campus and online learning environments, classroom assessment, student retention, and active membership in the Association for Teachers of Technical Writing (ATTW).

Herring's first book is entitled a "Retention Study of Black and White Male Students at Historically Black Universities in North Carolina."
According to Herring, results found in this peer-reviewed research study may be surprising to readers. However, the publication should be of special interest to educators looking for resources, data, and models of educational leadership in retaining students specifically within a college environment, but not limited to this academic setting.
Herring used a national database, IPEDS, to collect raw data containing enrollment and graduation rates between the years 1989 to 2005. He then applied chi-square analysis and administered a research study instrument to provide insight into the institutional characteristics of five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to suggest a relationship to data findings associated with male students. In Chapter 5 of Herring's book on retention, research findings provide insight into data outcomes, leadership implications, and recommendations for transformational change.
Herring plans to publish follow-up data findings for the 2008-2009 academic year when this information on college retention becomes available in 2010. See this website later in the year for details.
All proceeds from this book are being donated to Cape Fear Literacy Council (http://www.cfliteracy.org/abl.asp) to assist adult learners with improving basic skills in reading.
